THE LEV CHAIM CAPE TOWN MEDICAL FUND [Fund Co-ordinator: Rabbi Osher Deren]

Hymie Segal, Chaim Leib ben Reb Meir Halevi, was a beloved member of the Cape Town Jewish Community, living in Blouberg where he was a most beloved member and regular participant at Chabad of the West Coast.

On the way back from Shul to say Kaddish for his sister-in-law he fell and broke his hip, and after a few weeks in state medical facilities, a number of complications arose, and he sadly passed away from heart failure at Somerset Hospital, on the night of Yud Tes Kislev 5786, 9 December 2025.

In his memory, his community have joined together with SOSA to launch a project for needy people in Cape Town who can not afford to be on medical aid, to ensure that they are covered for a basic hospital plan and care.

Once the significant funds that are necessary will be put together, we will be working with Jewish Community Services in Cape Town to begin the process of assisting people in getting onto a Basic Medical Aid (Hospital Plan) to cover the costs of a private hospital in case of emergencies or essential medical care.

The estimated cost is approximately R2,500 per month – R30,000 a year – R150,000 for the five years that should be secured when bringing someone onto the plan. While there is generally around a 10 percent increase in premiums each year SOSA has several ways to help manage this increase.

Our first target is R1,8m before we roll it out. We are looking primarily for monthly commitments for a minimum of one year.

Thank you for considering and your participation!

18a tax certificates available on request.

This project is named Lev Chaim – the Heart of Life, as a tribute to Chaim Leib and his loving heart, in the hope that this project brings quality and quantity of life to those who otherwise might not have it.

SOSA was founded in 2008 by Rabbi Shaun Wingrin of Johannesburg as Shiur On Sally’s Alley. In 2019 SOSA pioneered the SOSA Medical Project and currently has over 100 families on their medical aid program.
