History
This year I turn 50. I’ve suffered a lot of trauma in my life. My mother passed away when I was thirteen years old and my father passed away in 2015. I have a sister, stepbrother and stepmother but no other family. I’ve lived in Kensington and various residences including Sandringham Square at Hatikva House and the Lodge.
I held a number of positions at various stores as well as at Kadimah prior to a car accident in 2018. I’m not working at the moment. I am on a government grant and receive a subsidy for a portion of my rent which I supplement by selling small trinkets outside a community establishment. I live a quiet life but suffer serious financial constraints. I believe I’m well liked, and some community members offer me small amounts of support.
Medical problems
I was born without oxygen to the brain and have been plagued by medical problems my whole life. In June 2018 I was hit by a car and collided with the windscreen which appears to have worsened my existing medical problems. One of my conditions includes Dystonia and my head lags to the right side of my body. This makes it difficult to function normally. In 2019, I started experiencing problems including poor control of my neck. I struggle to stand for long periods of time without getting dizzy, can only walk very short distances and experience severe migraines and hand cramps. I also have difficulties paying attention to my surroundings, walking, doing basic tasks like peeling potatoes and watching TV. I suffer from poor eyesight. I visited a neurologist, who gave me botox injections in the neck on a pro bono basis, which alleviated my neck problems but has now worn off.
I have been treated by the public hospital system for many years. When I was knocked down, I went to a large public hospital who said there was pressure on my brain. They failed to advise me that I needed an MRI and I feel very disillusioned by the treatment I received.
SOSA Medical is assisting me with the costs of a basic hospital plan but I will only be able to make use of it in respect of my existing conditions towards the end of this year, due to mandatory waiting periods. Even then it won’t cover the costs of much of my medication, blood tests or doctors visits.
Medical Costs
I need to have blood tests taken, possible treatments, as well as a full medical aid. I also have challenges covering my monthly medication costs.
Collectively my medical costs are estimated at R20 000 for this year.
I’m appealing to the generous community to assist me at this time of need.
